What pollutants do CleanWay® stormwater filtration systems remove?
CleanWay catch basin filter media captures turbidity, suspended solids, debris, heavy metals, oil sheen, and more depending on the configuration. Check out the Filtration Options and Filtration Specifications for more information.
How long does a filtration insert last?
As a general guideline, the filter element needs to be replaced annually. More frequent element changes are dictated by site conditions. The cleaner the site, the longer the service life between maintenance cycles.
How do you know when it's time to change the filter?
Monthly inspections, which are required for most permit holders, provide visual clues when it’s time for maintenance:
- when the rigid strainer insert is dirty and debris has accumulated in the strainer
- when the water level in the strainer rises above normal levels—which is seen during rain events
- when water samples taken from the unit show water quality decay or degradation
What type of maintenance is needed?
Cleaning catch basins can be done with a vactor truck or manually, completed by one person. First, the grate is removed to access the catch basin. Second, the rigid strainer is easily accessible and can be removed by hand, then emptied in an approved receptacle. To perform maintenance on the filter element, a vactor truck, vacuum truck street sweeper or large shop vac can all be used to remove accumulated pollutants and debris. Once the pollutants are removed, the filter element is placed back in the catch basin and the grate set in place.
What types of filtration options do you offer?

Do I need regulatory approval to use CleanWay products?
Because our products are intended to exchange existing catch basin filter inserts, or as part of a larger treatment system, approvals are not required. However, we recommend that you check with your local regulatory entity for any special considerations.
How do I know if the system is working correctly?
The best way to check whether your system is working correctly is to regularly take water quality samples. CleanWay catch basin inserts and downspout filtration systems all feature our proprietary, easy access sampling port. The sampling port is large enough to use a typical sampling bottle. It’s easy to take a sample with a dip stick with cup and view or analyze the contents.
Do you provide maintenance for your systems once installed?
We do not offer maintenance directly. Maintenance should be scheduled with a local catch basin / stormwater service provider to maintain your systems on regular intervals. In the Northwest, contact River City Environmental for catch basin cleaning, installation and stormwater services.
How often does the ADsorb-it® Filtration Fabric element need to be replaced in a typical parking lot application?
CleanWay ADsorb-it Filtration Fabric sorbent products remove oil, oil sheen and suspended solids from water. We recommend installation of new Filtration Fabric elements at the start of your rainy season. For example, a new element in the northwest is installed in early October. Once the leaves have fallen around the end of November, we replace the element again. This second element may last through the remainder of the rainy season. That depends heavily on the condition of the pavement, volume and type of traffic, the area of pavement that the filter serves and the weather conditions. To perform at its best, the filter element should be replaced regularly if exposed to oily grit.
If neglected, the filter will become clogged and water will start to flow out the bypass. No treatment of this bypass water will be achieved. Simple visual inspection of the filters on a monthly basis is all that is usually required to determine if the element needs to be replaced.
Filtration Fabric elements are very inexpensive and simple to replace. We encourage replacing the element at the first indication it’s becoming clogged.
